Deploying Odoo? Here's what I wish I had known before starting

When you deploy an ERP for the first time, you don't know what you don't know.

You think about the users, the budget, the modules to activate.

But often, essential elements are forgotten — technical or logistical points that seem secondary… until they become urgent.

It's by seeing projects in the field — sometimes chaotic, sometimes brilliantly successful — that you realise what truly makes the difference.

Here is what I wish I had heard before starting.

1. Logistics is the foundation — even if you don't sell pallets

You think your priority is invoicing, sales, or CRM? That's logical.

But if your company handles physical products — even in small quantities — logistics must be planned from the outset.

  • Multiple warehouses? Think about their configuration from the scoping stage.
  • Products moving from point A to point B? Plan the internal movement rules.
  • Frequent stock-outs? Automate your replenishments.

Don't leave logistics until the end.

Fixing a structural error in a warehouse that's already in operation is like trying to rebuild the foundations of an occupied house.

2. Traceability is a performance tool (not just a compliance one)

Are you in agri-food, pharma, or manufacturing?

Then you know the drill: lot traceability, serial numbers, expiry dates, regulatory compliance…

But even outside these sectors, traceability can simplify your life:

  • Find out where a product comes from in 2 clicks
  • Know who handled it, when, and under what conditions
  • Gain responsiveness in case of a return or customer dispute

Odoo can handle all of this. But be careful: it doesn't happen by itself.

You need to think through the scenarios, activate the right settings, and above all… train the teams.

Because a good tool used poorly remains wasted potential.

3. Logistics integrations are not a bonus. They are a pillar.

Many think that by installing Odoo, everything will be automated at once.

But an ERP alone doesn't do everything. You need to connect it to the ecosystem in which you work.

  • Delivery tracking? Integrate a tool like Effitrace.
  • Online sales? Synchronise with Shopify or Prestashop.
  • Physical point of sale? Configure the till to communicate with the stock.

Ask yourself the right questions from the start:

  • What data needs to flow between the tools?
  • Who needs access to what, and at what moment?
  • How to avoid duplicates, errors, and loss of information?

A solid ERP project is a well-connected project.

4. Odoo can do everything. But don't ask it to do everything… all at once.

This is probably one of the most classic traps: wanting to activate everything.

After all, Odoo is modular. CRM, sales, purchases, production, HR, marketing… you want to explore everything.

But that's the best way to drown.

The advice? Prioritise. Start with what hurts today:

Fix these points first. Then advance step by step.

5. A good tool is useless without good people around it

It can never be said enough: the success of an ERP project depends on team buy-in.

  • Involve users from the very beginning
  • Test the modules under real conditions
  • Plan training adapted to each person's role
  • Stay available to address obstacles and doubts

The tool is not the project. The change is the project.

And this change must be supported. Otherwise, Odoo will remain “just another thing” that nobody wants to open.
